Battle of the Air Fryers: Which One is the Best?

Everyone seems to be talking about air fryers. If they are not thinking about buying them, they would already be using them, and when they use them, they talk about what they are using them for.

It makes the urge to get an air fryer much stronger!

But wait, let’s talk about what an air fryer does and if you really need it.

Air fryers are convection ovens morphed into a bucket. At the top, there is a heating mechanism and a fan. So when it heats up the fan circulates the hot air around the food in the fryer basket. Because of this, the time taken to cook is shorter. It also makes the food crispy, similar to deep frying.

You can air fry anything frozen like french fries, mozzarella sticks, chicken tenders, eggs rolls and even BROWNIES!

Here, we are going to look at four different brands and their best selling air fryers. We want to see how each add up, so you will know which one will fit perfectly into your home in terms of form and function.

Philips Viva Collection Air Fryer HD9220/20

This sleek black air fryer that comes with smooth curves is definitely eye candy. But how does it rate when it comes to functionality?

The air fryer uses Rapid Air Technology that allows you to fry with 80% less oil or no oil at all. You can fry, bake, roast and grill in this electric machine. The technology applied also enables this air fryer to emit less smell.

Other features include:

  1. Automatic shut-off
  2. Cord storage (so everything is neat and tidy in the kitchen)
  3. Non-slip feet
  4. Temperature (80℃ to 200℃) and time control (up to 30 minutes)
  5. Ready signal
  6. Recipe book and app (so you’ll always have an idea about what to cook)

The basket has an 800g carrying capacity only. Therefore it is ideal for singles or couples. Because of its small and convenient size, it is really easy to pick up and go (just in case you are heading somewhere where you’d need to cook. Other good stuff about it is the nonstick coated drawer, and food basket can be washed in the dishwasher, so less cleaning time for you!

However, one negative point put out by a reviewer is that this air fryer does not have a safety trip mechanism. If you were to be frying something and you pull the drawer out, the fryer does not stop. It will still spew hot air, and that can be a little dangerous if you are not careful.

Other specifications:

Capacity basket : 0.8 kg

Colour : Black

Weight : 6.66kg

Product dimension : 38.4 x 28.7 x 31.5cm

Tefal Actifry Genius XL AH950

This air fryer is made to look like a pot may prove to be a little bulky for some, but before you write it off as something you don’t need in your kitchen, read about what it can provide for your family.

First, like all air fryers, it “fries” food with little to no oil. There are nine intelligent menu settings that you can opt to use. However, you can set your preferred temperature and time manually. A small measuring spoon to measure precise amounts of oil comes with the air fryer, so you know the exact amount to add into it since you will be using very little of it. The transparent hood allows you to view your food as it is cooking.

Other features include:

  1. Automatic shut off
  2. Dual motion technology
  3. Ceramic removable pan
  4. Paddle to rotate food for even frying
  5. Temperature (70℃ to 210℃) and time control (up to 60 minutes)
  6. Recipe book and app (so you’ll always have an idea about what to cook)

The pan has a 1,700g capacity. It is ideal to prep food for up to five or more people, depending on the portion per person. The nine preset modes of cooking make food-prep quick as you would have to remember the time or what temperature to set it in. The settings include breaded snacks, battered snacks and meat, to name a few.

The only setback about this air fryer is its bulkiness. You might need to prep space in the kitchen for this machine to sit permanently, as it will be a hassle to take it in and out of the storage area. It is also said to be quite noisy when it is cooking.

Other specifications:

Capacity basket : 1.7 kg

Colour : Black

Weight : 5.07 kg

Product dimension : 47.6 x 32.8 x 26.3cm

Mayer 3.2L Air Fryer MMAF80

Possibly the most affordable one from this review batch, the Mayer 3.2L Air Fryer MMAF80 is quite similar to the Philips Viva Collection Air Fryer. If you are looking for one that is below $100, this could be the one for you. It uses air circulation technology to help fry food at a faster pace.

Other features include:

  1. Automatic shut off
  2. Non-slip bottom
  3. Power light indicator
  4. Temperature (up to 210℃) and time control (up to 30 minutes)
  5. Easy to clean
  6. Analogue knob

With a 3.2 litre capacity, you can prepare a meal for a small family. The analogue knob means you don’t need to worry about the digital screen going bust after long term use.

The only setback about this air fryer is that the heat may not be evenly distributed, so you might have to flip the contents halfway to ensure it is evenly fried.

Other specifications:

Capacity basket : 3.2 L

Colour : Black

Weight : 4.75 kg

Product dimension : 33.5 x 33.5 x 38.5cm

EuropAce EAF 333Q – 3.5L Air Fryer with Handle

Last but not least is the EuropAce EAF 333Q – 3.5L Air Fryer with Handle. It looks a little like the Mayer 3.2L Air Fryer MMAF80. You can distinguish the difference from the placement of knobs and the handle function. Similar to the other air fryers, it circulates the hot air around the food in the basket.

Other features include:

  1. 3-dimensional circulation around internal cavity
  2. Temperature (80℃ to 200℃) and time control (up to 30 minutes)
  3. Non-stick coating food basket and food pan
  4. Manual setting
  5. Accessible handle for easy carrying

Many users have commented that this air fryer model is very easy to use. It seems to be less intimidating than the more functional, digitalised ones. Having a large 1.1kg cooking capacity is also a perfect addition to homes with four to five people, perfect for most households in Singapore.

Other specifications:

Capacity basket : 1.1 kg

Colour : Black

Weight : 4.98 kg

Product dimension : 30.0 x 36.5 x 31.5cm

Verdict

From what we see, all these air fryers perform the same function. Some are more user friendly than others, and for those who want more functions for simpler cooking, the price will be a little heftier. However, if we were to pick one that functions the best, it would have to be the Tefal Actifry Genius XL AH950.

Instead of recreating a generic model of an air fryer, we love the fact that we can see the food as it is cooking. The paddle to move the food items around to create even frying is also a feature we love.
