Choosing The Right Bed For A Restful Night

If you’re going to be doing something for 5-8 hours every day, it’s better to make sure you’re doing it right, and as comfortable as possible. Choosing the right mattress is the first (and usually the most important) step in making sure you have a restful night. In general, there are two main categories of mattresses, Foam and Spring mattresses, but each has their own subcategories. With so many types and choices of a mattress, we will break down how they differ from one another, so you can decide which one would be the most suitable for you.

Memory Foam

Memory foam has been the hot word for years in this industry. From memory foam pillows, to memory foam mattresses, they boast being able to give you a better night’s rest.

The mattress is great for side sleepers since it will slowly conform to the contours of your body, slowly taking the excess pressure off your shoulders and hips, while maintaining the support at the waist and arms.

Latex Foam

Latex foam in principal is similar to memory foam. Using multiple layers of latex foam stacked one on another, the resulting mattress is thick, springy and durable.

With such durability, its no surprise that latex mattresses are usually on the higher end of the spectrum when it comes to cost.

Gel

Gel mattresses are very similar to latex or memory foam mattresses. These mattresses have a base layer of foam (either of latex or memory foam), but with the addition of another layer of gel. The gel can also help to soften the surface of the mattress, as it is free to move.

Gel is also useful at dissipating body heat, so if you find that you get hot very easily in the night, or your mattress always feels too warm for your liking, give gel mattresses a shot.

Inner Spring

Inner spring (or coil) mattress have been around for centuries. The mattresses have a layer of springs attached to a light layer of foam and padding. The simple design means that these types of mattresses are usually cheaper, but cheap mattresses can come with the risk of easy wear and tear (due to the cheaper materials and springs used), or even padding that wears out very quickly, and you start getting sore spots. Plus, since the mattress uses a layer of springs which are all connected, movement on one side of the bed can make the other side of the bed move too.

You should keep this in mind if you are not the only one sleeping in that bed at night since your tossing and turning could affect your partners rest too.

Pocket Spring

Pocket spring mattresses work on similar principals to innerspring mattresses. The same formula of center layer of springs, plus padding and cushioning on the surface is employed. Except, now instead of a single continuous layer, each spring has its own ‘pocket’. This means that each and every spring moves independently, allowing the mattress to conform to the specific shape of your body as you sleep, similar to a memory foam mattress. This also means that you won’t be disturbing anyone else on the bed if you decide to move around at night.

Pocket spring mattresses are usually much more expensive than regular inner spring mattresses, owing to the more advanced technology, and intricate craftsmanship. Since each spring is individually packed, the mattress usually has a longer life, easily lasting 10 years before you need to change.

Pillow Top

While Pillow Topped mattresses are not specifically under either category, they are most commonly found with spring mattresses. A “pillow top mattress” just means that the mattress has an additional layer of padding at the surface. This is not limited to spring mattresses, but can also be manufactured on foam mattresses. The additional layer makes for extra soft comfort since it is, as the name suggests, like a pillow. This allows the mattress to be soft to the touch but maintains its natural firmness with either springs or foam below.
