Pop Up Toaster is currently our WFH (work-from-home) best friend! In every Singaporean household, there should be a toaster. When I was younger, my parents would create our own kopitiam in the kitchen because we needed our daily dose of kaya and butter toast.
Now that most of us are working from home thanks to the #CircuitBreaker, toasters are a very handy companion for when we’re super hungry but also, super busy. Just pop in a few slices of bread, get some eggs and ham, or butter and kaya, and you’ll be taking your first bite in no time!
This is a lifesaver you need in your kitchen. So, how do you pick one that’s right for you?
Choosing the perfect toaster
“Huh? Is it so complicated???” Not really! A few key considerations will help you decide. Here are three questions for you before we introduce our top five favourites.
2 slices or 4 slices at a go?
If you usually have breakfast with your family or housemates, time spent eating together is precious! 2-slice toasters will suffice if you are eating alone, but if you want to speed things up, opt for a 4-slice toaster. (Yup. It’s a thing.)
How much heat do you need?
Aside from browning your bread and making it crunchy, some toasters also come with other heat settings: defrosting and reheating. The defrost setting will bring back frozen bread to normal temperature. Pastries which you bungkus for teatime can be warmed up with the reheating setting.
Does it need to look beautiful?
Generally speaking, toasters are dressed up one of two ways: plastic or metal. Plastic is more affordable, whereas a metallic finish will give it more aesthetic. Does it affect the quality of your toasted bread? Nope. It’s a matter of preference.
If I could compare toasters to cars, I’d say the Evoke Toaster is the classic 1976 Corvette of the kitchen.
Sleek, shiny, and bold.
Morphy Richards Evoke Toaster is simple to use and beautiful to own. The three buttons from top to bottom indicate “Cancel”, “Toasting” and “Defrosting”. The toasting chamber is wider than conventional ones so that you can insert thicker pieces of bread, like bagels and sourdough. For quick and efficient cleaning, you can slide out a bread crumb tray at the base of this toaster.

Has this ever happened to you? When you pop in a slice of bread into the toaster, it comes out not quite brown.
You press the lever back down to brown it a little further, but it pops out burnt, and… in it goes into the trash bin.
Breville BTA-435 toaster will solve that problem. The Lift & Look button allows you to peep at your toast to check progress. If it’s too light, you can add 30 seconds more to the toasting cycle to achieve the perfect level of brown. No more burnt toast for breakfast!

There are two types of people in the kitchen: those who leave the toaster, and those who stand by and watch it from start to end to avoid burning (that’s me).
I think the first type of people are full of bravado, and this Severin toaster says yes! Toaster-watchers, fear not: if your bread is stuck in the chamber, the toaster will automatically switch off to prevent from overheating and burning.
This stainless steel model is so dependable and versatile. Check out those bun warmers that can hold any type of pastry. It’s not just bread slices anymore! But if you still want to go old school, sure – these long chambers can hold up to 4 slices of bread in total.

Not all toasts are made the same.
This 4-slice toaster by Sona is incredibly user-friendly for both the single user and families. For starters, each pair of chambers has its own browning and heat settings. So, you can create the perfect toast for everyone at the same time.
We would recommend this toaster for any shopper who is on a budget. This machine is evidently wider and would take up more space on your countertop.

We know Tefal for their pots and pans with the non-stick element. But with this toaster and egg cooker combination, Tefal is changing the breakfast game for all of us.
While toasting 2 slices of bread, you can prepare your egg any style you want – sunny side up, scrambled, poached or steamed. Heat is distributed evenly to the toaster and egg cooker so that you can have both cooking at the same time.
We could think of a hundred other things to cook in that egg cooker though. Leftover dishes, spinach, mushrooms, kaya, butter, bacon bits…
Off to fix myself a quick breakfast! Meanwhile, shop this model on Best Denki for $69.90.
Who knew there could be so many varieties of toasters? We hope this helped you shop for a new kitchen appliance!
