Going green with your pets at home
Calling all homeowners with fur babies: we all know how high maintenance a pet is. From their health and hygiene to what they wear, there’s a lot of things we need to take note of. While I’m sure we’re all trying our best to care for our pet pals. We can take it one step further by adopting these tips.
1. Eco-friendly bedding
Most pet beds have a pretty short lifespan. The materials used often absorbs odors and any dirt that happens to cling onto your pet’s fur. This results in a rather high turnover rate for your pet beds, which ultimately lands up in landfills or incineration plants, which are both not very good for the environment.
This is why you should opt for pet beds made from more environmentally friendly material, such as paper, wood shavings or even recycled plastic. But do take note that each of them also have their own limitations which you can either research more on or simply ask the staff at the pet store.
2. Natural cat litter
Cat litter has low toxicity but that does not mean that it is entirely safe for the environment. Some cat litter includes artificial chemicals and fragrances that may seep into the soil or environment when it is thrown.
As a more eco-conscious pet owner, you should look for cat litter made from natural ingredients, such as corn, grass or wood.
3. Eco friendly toys
Some pet toys may make use of plastics in the intermediate manufacturing process. To cut down the use of plastics, sustainable toys would be a better choice.
They make use of recycled materials, like cotton or rubber. An added plus is that they do not contain any toxic chemicals that could harm your pet, and they can last a much longer time.
4. Sustainable pet food
A healthy diet is as important for you as it is for your fur pals. Keep them healthy while also avoiding foods that are made with preservatives, chemicals and other byproducts.
Sustainable food choices are also available in which the foods are ethically sourced so they do not harm the planet in any way. As much as possible, try not to overfeed your pets with proteins as this may cause stress on the ecosystem.
5. Eco pet bowls
A good pet bowl should be made from safe and sustainable materials without any risk of leaching. There are sturdy pet bowls available that are made from ceramic, stainless steel and bamboo.
Do make sure that the products are non-toxic and use food-grade natural dyes.
6. Natural pet cleaning products
Cleaning products may come create a lot of environmentally harmful byproducts along the way. There are many sustainable cleaning products available in the market and some even have ingredients that protect your pets against fleas and ticks.
