Take a quick look at the inside of your fridge. Does it need a bit of organising? For some Singaporeans, organising equals buying organiser containers and bins for the stuff you want to organise. The same applies to fridge organisation.
But before you buy anything, do you know that you need to have an idea of how you want to organise it first?
Don’t worry, we will be helping you by giving you quick tips that will make organising your fridge a breeze!

1. Know What Goes Where
Do you ever look at the manual when you purchase your fridge? A large percentage of people do not. If you do, pat yourself on the back because you are one of the very few to do so. The manual usually dictates how the refrigerator can be used to its optimum potential. It also tells you where to store certain types of food items.
If your manual is long gone, here is a quick recap:
a. The freezer is where you store your ice cream and frozen food. However, do not leave it open, especially after you have cut the food seal open. Seal it back nicely so your food does not dry out.
b. Most people think that the upper shelf is the warmest part of the refrigerator, but that is not true. Hot air rises and cold air sinks. Therefore, the upper shelf in your refrigerator is the warmest. It is the perfect place to keep your butter, cheese and dips because you can indulge as soon as you take it out of the fridge.
c. The middle shelf is the most accessible part of the refrigerator. It is where your hand instantly reaches for when you open the fridge door. To ensure you do not forget to consume your leftovers, place them on the middle shelf. You can also place other types of foodstuff like carbonated drinks and snacks.
d. It is brrr-cold on the bottom shelf. If you are looking to defrost the meat from the freezer, place it here overnight. It will soften the meat while still keeping it fresh in time for it to go onto the pan.
e. Most people know that the drawers are for vegetables and fruits because they come with a sticker identifying its purpose when you first get your refrigerator. However, be sure to individually pack your fruits and vegetables as fruits produce ethylene gas, and vegetables are sensitive to that gas.

2. Micromanage Sections
One of the only times where micromanaging is good is when you are organising your fridge. Even if you have placed all the food items in their appropriate location, you still need to either arrange them in allocated containers and label them. When you open a jar of sauce, be sure to label the expiry date and when the jar was opened. As for leftover food, note down what it is, when the food entered the fridge and when it must be consumed by. This will ensure food is not wasted when it starts growing fungus. Yikes!
If it has an expiry date, remember to place them toward the front of the shelf because we rarely reach the depths of a shelf to get something we want to eat.

3. Identify Needed Organisers
Once you have rearranged the items in your fridge, you will be able to easily identify the type of organisers you need to purchase. However, keep in mind that whatever organiser that you buy, it needs to be clear. You want to be able to take a quick look inside the fridge and know where everything is located. The rest depends on the type of food you consume. It can be clear bins where you can chuck different types of chocolates and sweets, a wine rack or reusable bags to keep your cut vegetables. We also advise getting airtight containers if you are storing already cooked food.

4. Label and Date All Items
We covered a little bit of labelling in the section above, but we also advise getting a labelling sticker where you can rub off and update for when the container is reused to store other items. One of the best types is freezer tape because it stays in place even at low temperatures.
When labelling, we recommend labelling everything, even flour. Be specific when labelling. If there is a brand, write it down. Even if it has a long shelf life, that does not mean it doesn’t need to be labelled. Also, if you put a sandwich in the fridge that is for you to take to the office the next day, label it with your name so another family member does not munch it down when they are looking for a supper snack.
