The Power of Illusion: Tips and Tricks for Making Your Small Home Feel Bigger

April 5th 2023 | 2 min read
A small home can be very comfortable and cosy, especially if your home only has one or two people. However, it can also become claustrophobic and overwhelming if you feel like you’re constantly running out of space. While the size of your home can’t be changed, there are many design tricks used by interior designers to help create the illusion of a bigger space.

We’ve compiled a few tips and tricks for you if you feel like your home is starting to feel a little small.

1. Open concept homes

This may require a little pre-planning as it could involve knocking down some partition walls to join separate rooms together. A common example would be the kitchen and living room. In order for your home to look bigger, these connecting walls can be demolished to open up the space.

An alternative is to consider sliding walls, this is if you prefer to keep your rooms separate but still want that open feeling.

2. Windows

Natural lighting is a great and simple way of making your home look bigger. This also requires some pre-planning. You could opt for larger windows or having more windows where possible.

Having a brightly lit room also has an added psychological benefit of lifting your mood and giving your home a more cheerful appearance.

3. Show off your floors

Showing off the spaciousness of your home can be achieved if you show off your floors first. Having more visible floor space makes it seem like there is a larger area to walk.

You can do this by levitating your furniture, i.e placing them in the middle of the floor rather than against the walls, or choosing furniture with legs.

4. Light colours

Light colours help to reflect nautral light in a room much more. It also opens up the space as your eyes can take it the full size of the room.

Adding a glossy or glazed finish to your furniture can also help reflect even more light

5. Full-length shelves

Instead of waist-level shelves, floor-to-ceiling shelves draw one’s eyes upwards and hence emphasizes on the vertical space in a room.

You also have the advantage of more storage space for all your items, this keeps your space clutter-free which is crucial in smaller homes.

6. Mirrors

Mirrors are a great way to also emphasise on the vertical space in a room, if a large full-body mirror were used. They can also add depth to your home.

7. Connect indoors and outdoors

Extend the living room to the balcony, if you have one. This makes it seem like your living room is much bigger since it connects to the outside environment.

This illusion also introduces more light into your home, which we already know is another way of creating the illusion of space.
