Types of false ceilings

The ceiling is known as the fifth wall in any room. It is an important consideration for many home interiors, so if you have been researching on ceilings, you may have come across false ceilings. These are basically a fitted ceiling that hangs below the original ceiling to create an illusion of a lower ceiling. There are many kinds of false ceilings to choose from so we’ll just introduce a few and you can decide which you think best suits your interior design!

1. Plaster of Paris ceiling

This ceiling is the most common choice for false ceilings as it is long lasting and well-insulated. As you can see, it is often used to create interesting and unique ceiling patterns that draws attention upwards. However, do note that Paris ceilings can reduce the height of your room and may not be the most suitable choice for humid conditions.

2. Gypsum ceiling

Gypsum is a common material and its ceilings are relatively lightweight, heat-resistant and non-combustible. Most commercial buildings utilize gypsum false ceilings. You can customize the shape of the ceiling and its cost depends on the size and design of the false ceiling used.

3. Wooden ceiling

Wood gives more texture to your ceiling and can complement your interior design well if you opted for more natural, earthy tones. It can brighten up your room and make it more interesting. Wooden ceilings are slightly more sensitive to climate, temperature and moisture so it’s more suitable for homes with stable climates.

4. PVC ceiling

PVC ceilings are sturdy and durable. They are less likely to be damaged when being handled and are relatively affordable. An added advantage is that they are easy to clean, anti-fungal and waterproof. However, they can be damaged by heat and require energy-efficient lights as any excess heat produced can damage the panels.

5. Fabric ceiling

Fabric ceilings are an eye-catching choice because they can add a touch of elegance in any room that you do not get with other false ceiling. Don’t let the name fool you because fabric ceilings are actually non-flammable and water resistant. However, it does absorb odours and collect dust more.

6. Metal ceiling

Metal false ceilings often use galvanized iron, steel or aluminum. This type of false ceiling is hard, durable and easy to install. They are an economic choice and require little maintenance. They are good for thermal insulation and sound absorption. However, they are a slightly more expensive choice as compared to other false ceilings.
