If you are in the midst of the wonderful process of designing your BTO and penning down what you imagine your dream home could be like, here are some ideas for you to make your home appear bigger with the use of mirrors!
#1: Play around with mirrored strips
Mirror strips can be placed vertically or horizontally along your walls, or cabinets. These add playful patterns to your home and attract the eyes of anyone who walks by as it gives a different sort of texture to the home.
Mirror strips are usually placed in between solid-colored panels, which will help to create the impression of clean lines and edges. When placed near windows, the panels will help to enhance the luminosity of the room, reflecting natural sunlight filtering in through the window and brightening the space.
If you'd like something more unique and cheerful, you could play around with mirror strips of different lengths and sizes. To give your living room a more chic and elegant look, strips of uniformed lengths can be used. The use of vertically placed strips would also help to elongate your walls and give the illusion of having taller walls.
#2: Be a shape-shifter

Recently, mirrors have begun to adopt different shapes and sizes. Play around with honeycomb shapes, semicircles, and diamonds! Be open to deviating from the normal rectangular mirrors. Semicircle mirrors add a touch of softness and can be a unique piece on your walls that adds contrast to the common sharp clean lines of furniture. Honeycomb mirrors add texture and style to liven up your walls.
Playing around with the frames of mirrors can be really interesting as well. Having wacky designs can liven up your home while having minimal frames can help to accentuate clean clear lines within your home, and clearly segregate spaces within your home. These can help to demarcate boundaries without the use of actual barriers, and 'borrow' other spaces to add to the visual field to make your home seem larger.
#3: Size up! (Or down)

Consider having mirrors of different lengths, even full-lengths! It might seem like a bold move, but having such a mirror in your living room can create the instant impression of a large open space, and it often makes it seem as if the room has doubled in size!
Mirrors not only enlarge the room, but also elongate the lines of your furniture and room as well. Full-length mirrors can not only be placed in the living room - consider having them in your bathroom as well! This makes for a very 'posh' look and would be similar to toilets that you find in the CBD area. Furthermore, as toilets usually have a smaller source of natural light, having a full-length mirror would be helpful to brighten up your bathroom easily! Brighter rooms tend to look bigger as well, so that is certainly a plus point and a useful home hack!
#4: Add them to unexpected spaces

Mirrors can be used to distinguish different spaces in your home as well. They could be used to segregate rooms, walls, or cabinets, and you also have the option to use tinted or lightly frosted mirrors. These are good methods to add different textures to your walls and home as well. Having mirrors in your living spaces will definitely add new depth to your room, and enlarge your surrounding.
One nifty trick that you could adopt is using mirrors to conceal cabinet doors. You could even go as far as to conceal your bomb shelter's door with a full-length mirror! This could come in really handy to do the last outfit check to finalize your #OOTD before heading out!
#5: Let there be light

Having mirrors around your home and placing lights behind them in order to make them backlit contributes a warm and cozy ambiance to the room. If you plan for your walls to be dark, the glow from the light behind your mirror would help to add contrast, brightness and act as a focal point to the room.
A reflective statement on mirrors
Mirrors are a really good investment in order to brighten and enlarge your room. They allow you to play around with shapes, sizes, and designs and accentuate the style of your house and your furniture. Feel free to consider wacky shapes, patterns, and textures! And most importantly, enjoy the process of designing your BTO!
