Disappointing and Frustrating (Do not recommend)

Our experience with Ju Design Studios/Alex was one full of frustrations and disappointments. Initially we were impressed with him as he showed great effort, coming up with a full concept and mood board for our house. His design resonated with us and he was also responsive throughout the renovation. However, the quality of work was unsatisfactory and there was a noticeable lack of attention to detail. Furthermore when issues arise, we often found that he took no responsibility for them and we were often blamed instead. At 1 point, instead of fixing an issue we raised, Alex had gotten upset and suggested to terminate the contract, which I found unprofessional. Below are some issues we faced when working with Alex.
Water leakage / Carpentry damage
3 months after moving in, we noticed that inside our kitchen carpentry was moldy and often very humid. This kitchen carpentry conceals HDB pipes and is installed beside the rubbish chute (high water contact points). When we brought this up to Alex and his contractors, they said the humidity was due to us not airing our carpentry. His solution was for us to open our cabinets regularly instead of checking for water leakage. We had to insist on dismantling part of the carpentry for a thorough check and that’s when we found water marks. All our questions were dismissed when we asked if the HDB pipes and/or walls could be damaged due to hacking works as we did not face any leakage issues before the renovation. We also asked if he did his due diligence of checking the pipes and walls for leakages before installing the carpentry and his response was that it was not part of his job. Our warranty was not honored as he placed the full blame on HDB as these are “HDB’s walls and pipes, not his”.
Uneven walls
As we were changing our flooring, the existing tiles and skirting had to be hacked away and patched back. However upon inspecting the house floors/walls, we noticed that the area that used to be the skirting was glaringly uneven (our walls had no skirting). When we pointed it out, the reply from both Alex and the contractors was “it’s like that” and we had to just deal with it. It was only after a week of solutions suggested by us, then they went ahead to fix it. On the day when the contractors came, he mentioned that the uneven walls suit our industrial theme (our theme is not industrial lol) and we should have kept the uneven walls. I thought that was a pretty funny joke but apparently he was serious.
Other issues due to poor attention to detail
We also found burnt marks all over our floor throughout the house. When we brought it up to Alex, he said he didn’t know and side stepped this defect. As our flooring is cement screed, no rectification can be done and we just had to accept it.
Due to his oversight from carpentry measurements and project changes, we were overcharged $1.7K. If we had not done the checks ourselves, we would have gifted him that amount.
We chose to engage Alex as our ID due to the interesting designs from his various projects and good reviews. Despite his latest review was from 2019, we decided to take a chance with him and our experience was a far cry from the reviews we have read. Even though the design was what we had envisioned, the quality of work has not met expectations and we cannot recommend him based on our experience.
